Natural deodorants that work and some that really don’t.

Trying to find a natural deodorant, that actually works, can be a lot like playing with a really sweaty, smelly deck of cards that you’d rather not touch.

Basically, it can be kinda gross.

Still, many of us are trying to clean up our bodies and get rid of toxins where we can, so we keep on shuffling with a fresh shirt on standby.

This is exactly why we have been blocking our pores and slathering aluminum cream on our skin for years and years.

Because we don’t want to SMELL.

Lucky for us, natural deodorants are way more mainstream than they used to be. You don’t need to go to some ultra-exclusive health food store to find them — plus, now we have the internet!

One word of caution: body chemistry is 100% a personal and unique thing, so not every option will work for every person.

Trust me, I learned this to be very very true:

Native

$10 USD – Online

Made in the USA

Cruelty Free

75g of product in a stick

Scent: Coconut & Vanilla (sensitive)

Would I recommend? YES

Native is one of the more popular brands online, so you’ve probably heard of it before. The product feels pretty similar to most stick deodorants and is really easy to apply. I found the detox period to be fairly non-existent, which surprised me since this was the first product I tried after using traditional deodorants for so many years.

The odour protection was very good and I really liked the coconut & vanilla scent. About halfway through the day I would reapply because after about 6 hours I wasn’t as fresh as I would like to be.

Ultimately, the reason I stopped using Native and tried something new was because I started getting really large, painful blocked pores. Too bad, since I really liked this one!

Crystal

$2.99 – 4.97 CAD – In store or Amazon.ca

Made in the USA

50ml of product in roller ball

Scent: Natural

Would I recommend? SURE

Crystal deodorants have been in the drugstore for years and I guarantee you could probably find one right now wherever it is you usually shop. I’ll be honest though, I thought they were probably just crap. I mean, look at the packaging! What a weird picture to put on deodorant.

This product is potassium alum based, using natural mineral salts to leave your skin with a barrier against bacteria. The odour protection was surprisingly good, particularly for being natural scented. I didn’t find it necessary to reapply during the day, but I also didn’t feel as confident using a natural scented product as I do with a scented one.

For that reason, I kept looking for an effective, scented product.

Rocky Mountain Soap Company

$9.75 CAD – In store or online

Made in Canada

Cruelty Free, Vegan

60ml of product in roller ball

Scent: Tea Tree Oil

Would I recommend? NOPE

After my experience with the Crystal Body Deodorant, I was really excited to try a scented version of this type of product. Like that brand, the Rocky Mountain Soap Company deodorant is also potassium alum based and functions the same by leaving a natural mineral salt barrier.

However, this product was my epic fail. Epic may not be strong enough of a word – maybe, disastrous?

This product claims “6 hours of non-funkiness” and boy, was I funky. Immediately after applying I was already smelly! Seriously, I have never smelled quite so bad in my life. Obviously, this is why I stopped using the deodorant. Gross.

I will add that this is one of those times where body chemistry comes into play. I know people swear up and down by this product and it works really well for them. Unfortunately, not for me!

Jason

$7.99 CAD – In store or Well.ca

Made in Canada

Cruelty Free

71g of product in a stick

Scent: Soothing Aloe Vera

Would I recommend? YES

Because of my experience with blocked pores using Native, I decided to try an option without coconut oil. I stumbled across this product in Winners and because states it has clinically proven odour protection, of course I wanted to give it a shot!

I’m not sure about the odour protection claims, since I needed to reapply about 4 hours into my day. However, I really liked this product. I thought the scent was nice and fresh and the product feels a lot like a traditional stick of deodorant.

My only issue was my skin was left feeling sticky and after time I started to develop a bit of a rash – so obviously I reacted to something again. Sigh. That body chemistry thing though!

No Pong

$8.35 CAD Original – Online

$9.40 CAD Bicarb Free – Online

Made in Canada

Cruelty Free

35g of cream product in a tin

Scent: Lemongrass & Geranium

Would I recommend? 1000% YES!

When I saw an ad for No Pong on Facebook, I thought it was probably too good to be true, but also too weird to not give a chance. The reviews were great, the price was in Canadian dollars, so I ordered it.

This product is completely different from the others I tested — it’s a cream that you apply by rubbing in with your fingers. Don’t worry, it’s not as weird as you think. No Pong works by creating a pH environment that bacteria can’t survive in, while also absorbing sweat and letting your skin breathe. After time, they say that some people begin sweating less – and I can totally confirm that to be true.

I did start to develop a bit of sensitivity with the original formula, so I also tested out the bicarb-free formula. Both versions of No Pong claim to give up to 12 hours of odour protection, which I find true of the original but not with the bicarb-free formula. However, since I started using the bicarb-free No Pong on rotation with my original, I no longer have any sensitivity.

Major win? No Pong performs better for me than clinical strength aluminum based deodorants ever did. After working out I don’t even need more deodorant. It’s magic, I swear.

The Verdict

I guess it’s pretty obvious that No Pong was the clear champion of my natural deodorant face-off!

But look, I’ll be real with you – even if you try the same natural deodorants I’ve reviewed here, you might still get stuck with some stink at first. This is just one of those things that you’ve gotta get through if you want the aluminum-free prize.

I wish you luck, patience, and hope you only have to go through 5 to find your winner!

Have you tried any natural deodorants?
